Lexington

College game days and events

Kroger Field is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. For in-stadium work we fly live drone feeds to the Davis Wade Stadium video boards for Mississippi State football, and we can bring the same setup to a Bluegrass venue with the school's approval. For concerts, festivals and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

Horse farms, distilleries and brand films

Horse farms, distilleries and estates around Lexington suit brand and real estate films, filmed only with the owner's approval and with horses kept calm and at a distance. We also flew live broadcast drone work for the T-Mobile 5G Range Show at the 2024 PGA Championship in Louisville; read the PGA Championship case study. For barns, tasting rooms and venues, an indoor one-take fly-through shows the space in a single shot; see indoor fly-through tours.

Federal sites, wilderness and Kentucky law

The federal medical prison in Lexington, Kentucky National Guard sites in Fayette and Bourbon counties and the Blue Grass Army Depot in Madison County are federal no-drone areas around the clock. Clifty Wilderness in Daniel Boone National Forest, at the Red River Gorge, is designated wilderness, where the Forest Service does not allow drones to take off or land. Kentucky law makes it a crime to fly a drone over power plants, refineries, rail yards, water plants, prisons, cell towers and other key infrastructure to harm or surveil them, and to fly over or record food processing plants or livestock feeding operations without the owner's consent. FAA-compliant commercial flights are exempt, but we still get the owner's consent before filming any of those sites. Kentucky State Parks require a drone permit from the park manager, with an FAA certificate and liability insurance, and commercial shoots need the Department of Parks' written consent, so we apply well ahead of any state park shoot.

Airspace

Blue Grass Airport, about 4 miles west of downtown, has Class C airspace, so many Lexington addresses need LAANC. Kentucky law also bars recording people or private property in a way that violates a reasonable expectation of privacy, so we keep neighbors and private yards out of frame unless they agree to be filmed. We check every Lexington location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near Kroger Field on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you film horse farms?

Yes, with the farm owner's approval. We keep the drone high and at a distance from horses, and Kentucky's infrastructure law also requires consent near livestock feeding operations.

Can you fly drones in Kentucky state parks?

Only with a drone permit from the park manager, and commercial shoots also need written consent from the Department of Parks. We apply well ahead with our FAA certificate and insurance.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Lexington?

It depends on the address. Blue Grass Airport has Class C airspace. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
