Louisville

Our Louisville credit: the 2024 PGA Championship

At the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, our crew flew live broadcast drone work for the T-Mobile 5G Range Show, the live pre-championship show streamed on the PGA app; read the PGA Championship case study. Golf, bourbon distilleries, riverfront venues and new developments suit brand and real estate films, filmed with the owner's approval. For concerts, festivals and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

Churchill Downs and stadiums

Churchill Downs bans drones during Derby week, and Kentucky State Police, working with federal partners, enforce a no-drone zone over the track from Thursday through Derby Day, so we stay well clear of it then and check NOTAMs for any added flight restriction. L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. Fort Knox, about 30 miles southwest, is a federal no-drone area, and its restricted airspace starts at the surface.

Federal sites and Kentucky law

The Louisville Air National Guard Base at the airport is a federal no-drone area around the clock. Kentucky law makes it a crime to fly a drone over power plants, refineries, rail yards, water plants, prisons, cell towers and other key infrastructure to harm or surveil them, and to fly over or record food processing plants or livestock feeding operations without the owner's consent. FAA-compliant commercial flights are exempt, but we still get the owner's consent before filming any of those sites. Kentucky law also bars recording people or private property in a way that violates a reasonable expectation of privacy, so we keep neighbors and private yards out of frame unless they agree to be filmed. Park and event permits come from Louisville Parks and Recreation and the event organizer, so we check them before any public-space shoot.

Airspace

Louisville Muhammad Ali International, about 4 miles south of downtown, has Class C airspace, and Bowman Field has its own control tower, so many Louisville addresses need LAANC. We check every Louisville location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near Churchill Downs during Derby week?

No. Churchill Downs bans drones during Derby week, and state police enforce a no-drone zone over the track from Thursday through Derby Day. We check NOTAMs for any added restriction too.

Can you fly near L and N Federal Credit Union Stadium on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you fly near Fort Knox?

No. Fort Knox is a federal no-drone area, and its restricted airspace starts at the surface, so we plan shoots well outside it.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Louisville?

It depends on the address. Louisville Muhammad Ali International has Class C airspace, and Bowman Field has a control tower. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
