Indianapolis
Lucas Oil Stadium and events
Lucas Oil Stadium is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. For in-stadium work we flew live drone feeds for TV and the video board for the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. Our crew also flew drones down the Las Vegas Strip and around the F1 cars at the 2022 Las Vegas Grand Prix launch party. For concerts, conventions and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Indianapolis Motor Speedway prohibits drones on all of its property, it is on the FAA stadium list for covered races, and the FAA puts an extra flight restriction over the Speedway for the Indianapolis 500. We fly near it only outside those windows and with the track's approval.
Camp Atterbury, Indy Parks and Indiana law
Camp Atterbury, about 40 miles south, is a federal no-drone area with restricted airspace from the surface. Indy Parks requires advance approval from the parks director for drone flights, with an FAA certificate and insurance naming the City of Indianapolis. Indiana law makes it a crime to use a drone to interfere with police, firefighters or emergency crews, or to film people in private places without their consent, so we keep private spaces out of frame. Indiana DNR properties, including state parks, reservoirs and state forests, ban drones except at designated sites, and the DNR grants licenses to launch and film only occasionally, so we contact the property manager well ahead.
Airspace
Indianapolis International, about 7 miles southwest of downtown, has Class C airspace, so many Indianapolis addresses need LAANC. We check every Indianapolis location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.
