Columbus

Stadiums and events

Ohio Stadium is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. For in-stadium work we flew live drone feeds for TV and the video board for the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, and we fly live drone feeds to the Davis Wade Stadium video boards for Mississippi State football. For concerts, festivals and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

Rickenbacker and federal sites

Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base and the Defense Supply Center Columbus are federal no-drone areas around the clock. We plan every Columbus shoot around them.

Ohio law and parks

Ohio law, in effect since April 2025, makes it a crime to fly in violation of FAA rules, to get in the way of police, firefighters or emergency crews, or to photograph or loiter over a critical facility, such as a power plant, water plant, rail yard, jail, military site or a hospital with an air ambulance, to further a crime. We keep those sites out of the shot unless the owner asks us to film them. Ohio lets cities, counties and park districts set drone rules for their own parks and property, so we check park and event permits before any public-space shoot. Columbus Metro Parks requires a permit for commercial and filming flights and bans drones in state nature preserves. Ohio state parks prohibit drones without permission from the Division of Parks and Watercraft, except at designated airfields, and ban flights over beaches, crowds, boats and roads, so we ask well ahead of any state park shoot. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Airspace

John Glenn Columbus International, about 6 miles east of downtown, has Class C airspace, and Rickenbacker and the Ohio State University Airport have their own control towers, so many Columbus addresses need LAANC. We check every Columbus location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near Ohio Stadium on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you fly near Rickenbacker?

Not over the base. Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base is a federal no-drone area, and its towered airport needs LAANC nearby.

Can you fly drones in Ohio state parks?

Only with permission from the Division of Parks and Watercraft or at a designated airfield. Flights over beaches, crowds, boats and roads are banned, so we ask well ahead of any shoot.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Columbus?

It depends on the address. John Glenn Columbus International has Class C airspace, and two other airports have control towers. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
