The Grand Prix
Our crew flew drones down the Las Vegas Strip and around the F1 cars at the 2022 Las Vegas Grand Prix launch party. The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is on the FAA stadium and event list, so the 3 nautical mile restriction applies around the downtown street course on covered event days, and we fly race content only inside an approved production. See Live drone feeds for video boards and Concert and festival FPV drones across the US.
Waterfront and beach festivals
Festivals and concerts on the downtown waterfront and the St. Pete Pier, and events on St. Pete Beach and Pass-a-Grille, are planned inside the organizer's production plan. Beach shoots add their own limits: crowds, launch spots and sea turtle and shorebird nesting closures, so we check local rules and posted signs first. Flying directly over an open crowd is only allowed when the drone and the operation meet FAA rules for flying over people, so otherwise we keep flight paths over the stage, closed areas and open lanes.
Parks and Florida law
Florida state parks prohibit drone takeoff and landing on park land, so we launch from outside the park. County parks such as Fort De Soto set their own rules. Florida Statute 330.41 bars drone flights over critical infrastructure such as substations, water plants, seaports, airports and military sites unless the flight is a commercial one that follows FAA rules or the owner consents in writing, and it bars flights over K-12 schools, so we plan routes around both.
Airspace
Albert Whitted Airport on the downtown waterfront has a control tower, St. Pete-Clearwater International 8 miles north is towered, and Tampa Class B airspace covers much of the bay, so many addresses need LAANC. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater is a federal no-drone area. We check every St. Petersburg location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.
