Live event drones in Boston

This page is for event producers, promoters and venues planning a live event in Boston. We fly concerts, festivals, parades, arena shows, races and brand activations, with drone feeds sent live to screens, the stream or a broadcast truck, plus fast edits for social. For homes, tourism and general aerials see our Boston, MA drone videographer page, and for one-take fly-throughs see our Boston, MA FPV drone pilot page.

Festival season

Boston Calling has been held in recent years at the Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston, and festivals like it run under the promoter's production plan, so we fly only inside it from agreed launch spots. Our crew flew aerials for the All Things Go Music Festival at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, and brings the same festival planning here. Flying directly over an open crowd is only allowed when the drone and the operation meet FAA rules for flying over people, so otherwise we keep flight paths over the stage, closed areas and open lanes.

TD Garden, MGM Music Hall and Fenway

TD Garden, home of the Celtics and Bruins, and MGM Music Hall at Fenway host concerts where we fly with the venue's approval. Indoor flights at an arena need the venue's approval and a flight plan agreed with production, security and the lighting crew, and we fly small, lightweight drones close to the action. Fenway Park is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. See Live drone feeds for video boards and Concert and festival FPV drones across the US.

Boston Common and city parks

The Friends of the Public Garden says drone photography is currently not permitted on Boston Common, the Public Garden or the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. Commercial activity in other city parks needs a written permit from Boston Parks and Recreation, and film permits start with the Mayor's Office of Tourism, Sports and Entertainment. Logan's Class B airspace covers downtown. We check every Boston location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

Massachusetts drone rules

Massachusetts has no statewide drone statute, but DCR rules bar drone takeoffs and landings on state parks, beaches and reservations, including the Charles River Reservation, without a special use permit, and DCR film permits need a certificate of insurance naming DCR.

FAQs

Can you fly a drone at an event on Boston Common?

No. Drone photography is currently not permitted on Boston Common, the Public Garden or the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, so we cover those events from the ground.

Can you film Boston Calling with a drone?

Only inside the festival's production plan, from launch spots agreed with the promoter and clear of open crowds.

Can you fly at Fenway Park on event days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events, unless we are part of the approved production.

Can you send a live drone feed to screens or a stream?

Yes. We send live drone video to LED screens, the livestream or a broadcast truck, and agree the format and cue points with your production team before show day.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
