Hartford

Golf and stadium events

Our crew flew live broadcast drone work for the T-Mobile 5G Range Show at the 2024 PGA Championship; read the PGA Championship case study. Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. For concerts, tournaments and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

Connecticut law and parks

Connecticut bars municipalities from regulating commercial drones flown by FAA-certified remote pilots, though municipal water companies can still restrict drones over public water supply and watershed land, so we check before filming near reservoirs. Drones are prohibited in Connecticut state parks and forests unless the DEEP commissioner authorizes them through a special use license. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Federal sites

The Bradley Air National Guard Base at Bradley International is a federal no-drone area around the clock, and Groton's submarine base and shipyard to the southeast are too, so we plan shoots well clear of them.

Airspace

Bradley International in Windsor Locks, about 12 miles north of downtown, has Class C airspace, and Hartford-Brainard Airport, about 3 miles southeast of downtown, has its own control tower, so many Hartford addresses need LAANC. We check every Hartford location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near Rentschler Field on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you fly drones in Connecticut state parks?

Only with a special use license from the DEEP commissioner. Drones are otherwise prohibited in state parks and forests, so we apply well ahead.

Can Connecticut towns ban commercial drones?

Generally no. State law bars municipalities from regulating commercial drones flown by FAA-certified pilots, except water companies over public water supply land. Property owners still decide who launches from their land.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Hartford?

It depends on the address. Bradley International has Class C airspace, and Hartford-Brainard Airport has a control tower. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
