Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown

Colonial National Historical Park, including Jamestown, Yorktown and the Colonial Parkway, is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval. Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area, the College of William and Mary and attractions such as Busch Gardens are private or institutional property, so we fly there only with their permission. York River State Park follows the state park rule: Virginia state parks ban drones except commercial flights under a special use permit from the park office, so we apply well ahead of any state park shoot.

Military sites and Virginia law

Federal no-drone areas cover the land of each military and security site around the clock. Around the Historic Triangle they include Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force Base. Since July 2025, Virginia law makes an unauthorized drone flight over a military base, critical infrastructure, a utility or a federally regulated port facility a felony, so we stay off them unless the operator authorizes the flight. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Airspace

Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, about 3 miles southwest of the city, has no control tower, while Newport News/Williamsburg International to the southeast has a tower and controlled airspace. We check every Williamsburg location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

Can you fly at Jamestown or Yorktown?

Not from Colonial National Historical Park land. Launching or landing a drone there is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval.

Can you fly in Colonial Williamsburg?

Only with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's permission, since the Historic Area is private property.

Can you fly near Naval Weapons Station Yorktown?

No. It is a federal no-drone area, as are Fort Eustis and Langley, and Virginia law makes unauthorized flights over military bases a felony.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Williamsburg?

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
