Norfolk, VA Drone Videographer and Operator

Downtown and the waterfront

Downtown, Waterside, Ghent, the NEON District and the Elizabeth River waterfront suit brand, hotel and real estate films, filmed with the owner's approval. For concerts, games and festivals we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones. For hotels and venues an indoor one-take fly-through shows the space in one shot; see indoor fly-through tours. Our Virginia home base is in Lynchburg, so Norfolk shoots are planned by our Virginia crew rather than as a long-distance trip; see Lynchburg drone videography.

Naval Station Norfolk and the port

Federal no-drone areas cover the land of each military and security site around the clock. Around Norfolk they include Naval Station Norfolk, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads and Coast Guard Base Portsmouth. Since July 2025, Virginia law makes an unauthorized drone flight over a military base, critical infrastructure, a utility or a federally regulated port facility a felony, so we stay off them unless the operator authorizes the flight. That covers the shipyards and marine terminals along the harbor, so we keep flights off them unless the operator authorizes the shoot.

Stadiums and Virginia law

Dick Price Stadium at Norfolk State is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. Virginia lets localities regulate drone takeoff and landing only on their own property, so we launch from private property with the owner's approval or get the locality's permission. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Airspace

Norfolk International, about 3 miles northeast of downtown, has a control tower and controlled airspace, and Chambers Field at the naval station has its own tower. We check every Norfolk location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near Naval Station Norfolk?

No. The naval station, the shipyard and other Hampton Roads Navy sites are federal no-drone areas, and Virginia law makes unauthorized flights over them a felony.

Can you film the harbor and port?

From permitted sites and with FAA authorization where needed, but not over marine terminals or shipyards unless the operator authorizes it, because Virginia law protects those facilities.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Norfolk?

It depends on the address. Norfolk International has a control tower and controlled airspace. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

Can you fly near Dick Price Stadium on event days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
