Downtown and the Roanoke Valley

Downtown, the Market, Mill Mountain, Salem and the greenways suit brand, recruiting and real estate films, filmed with the owner's approval. Virginia lets localities regulate drone takeoff and landing only on their own property, so we launch from private property with the owner's approval or get the locality's permission. For concerts, games and festivals we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones. Our Virginia home base is in Lynchburg, so Roanoke shoots are planned by our Virginia crew rather than as a long-distance trip; see Lynchburg drone videography.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs along the edge of the Roanoke Valley, is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval. We film the ridges from permitted private or public sites outside the Parkway. Virginia state parks ban drones except commercial flights under a special use permit from the park office, so we apply well ahead of any state park shoot.

Smith Mountain Lake and the region

Smith Mountain Lake is roughly an hour southeast by road, and we film lake homes, marinas and waterfront real estate there too. Since July 2025, Virginia law makes an unauthorized drone flight over a military base, critical infrastructure, a utility or a federally regulated port facility a felony, so we stay off them unless the operator authorizes the flight. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Airspace

Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, about 3 miles northwest of downtown, has a control tower and controlled airspace over much of the city, so many addresses need LAANC. We check every Roanoke location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

Can you fly on the Blue Ridge Parkway?

No. The Parkway is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without written approval. We film from permitted sites outside it.

Can you fly near the Roanoke airport?

Only with FAA authorization. Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional has a control tower and controlled airspace, and some nearby grid squares cannot be approved through LAANC.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Roanoke?

Can you fly drones in Virginia state parks?

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
