Richmond, VA Drone Videographer and Operator

Air Views Media is a drone videography company serving Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield and Central Virginia for events, concerts, the riverfront, real estate and brand films. Our crew flew five days of live coverage, live to FOX, at the FIFA Fan Festival Atlanta. FAA Part 107 certified pilots, $10M liability standard (optional up to $25M).

Richmond

Events and the riverfront

Brown's Island, the Canal Walk, Scott's Addition, the Fan, Shockoe Bottom and the James River give Richmond aerials range, filmed with the venue's or owner's approval. For festivals, concerts and races we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones. Our Virginia home base is in Lynchburg, so Richmond shoots are planned by our Virginia crew rather than as a long-distance trip; see Lynchburg drone videography.

Richmond Raceway

Richmond Raceway is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events.

Federal sites, parks and Virginia law

Federal no-drone areas cover the land of each military and security site around the clock. Near Richmond they include Defense Supply Center Richmond in Chesterfield County, Fort Gregg-Adams in Prince George County and the federal prison complex in Petersburg. Since July 2025, Virginia law makes an unauthorized drone flight over a military base, critical infrastructure, a utility or a federally regulated port facility a felony, so we stay off them unless the operator authorizes the flight. Virginia law also bars dropping items at, or photographing identifiable inmates at, a correctional facility, so we plan routes clear of them. Richmond National Battlefield Park is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval. Virginia state parks ban drones except commercial flights under a special use permit from the park office, so we apply well ahead of any state park shoot. Virginia lets localities regulate drone takeoff and landing only on their own property, so we launch from private property with the owner's approval or get the locality's permission. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Airspace

Richmond International, about 6 miles east of downtown, has a control tower and controlled airspace over much of the area, so many addresses need LAANC. We check every Richmond location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near Richmond Raceway on event days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you fly near Fort Gregg-Adams or Defense Supply Center Richmond?

No. Both are federal no-drone areas, and Virginia law makes unauthorized drone flights over military bases a felony. We plan routes well clear of them.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Richmond?

It depends on the address. Richmond International has a control tower and controlled airspace. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

Can you fly drones in Virginia state parks?

Only for commercial work with a special use permit from the park office. Recreational drone flights are banned in Virginia state parks.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
