Live event drones in San Diego

This page is for event producers, promoters and venues planning a live event in San Diego. We fly concerts, festivals, parades, arena shows, races and brand activations, with drone feeds sent live to screens, the stream or a broadcast truck, plus fast edits for social. For homes, tourism and general aerials see our San Diego, CA drone videographer page.

Festival broadcasts and Comic-Con

Our crew flew drones for the Vans Warped Tour Long Beach live broadcast on Prime Video, and runs festival broadcasts here the same way, inside the production plan. Brand activations around Comic-Con at the San Diego Convention Center and shows at Pechanga Arena are flown with the venue's approval. Indoor flights at an arena need the venue's approval and a flight plan agreed with production, security and the lighting crew, and we fly small, lightweight drones close to the action. Flying directly over an open crowd is only allowed when the drone and the operation meet FAA rules for flying over people, so otherwise we keep flight paths over the stage, closed areas and open lanes.

Petco Park and Snapdragon Stadium

Petco Park, home of the Padres, is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. Snapdragon Stadium, home of San Diego State football and San Diego FC, lists drones among prohibited items, so any flight there happens inside an approved production. See Live drone feeds for video boards and Concert and festival FPV drones across the US.

City permits for drone filming

The City of San Diego's Special Events and Filming Department reviews drone filming on city property. Its checklist asks for a signed filming registration form, FAA registration, a Part 107 remote pilot certificate with any waivers, a written plan of activities with dates, times, aircraft and a map, and drone liability coverage of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence with an endorsement naming the City of San Diego as additional insured.

Airspace and privacy

San Diego International sits close to downtown inside Class B airspace, and military airfields such as Naval Air Station North Island and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar are part of the metro. We check every San Diego location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it. California privacy law makes it an invasion of privacy to enter the airspace above someone's land without permission to capture private or family activity, so we keep homes, yards and people who have not agreed to be filmed out of frame.

FAQs

Do you need a city permit to fly at a San Diego event on city property?

Yes. The Special Events and Filming Department needs a filming registration, Part 107 and FAA paperwork, a flight plan and drone coverage naming the city.

Can you fly at Petco Park on event days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events, unless we are part of the approved production.

Can you fly a drone at Snapdragon Stadium?

Only inside an approved production. The stadium lists drones among prohibited items, so flights there are planned with the venue.

Can you send a live drone feed to screens or a stream?

Yes. We send live drone video to LED screens, the livestream or a broadcast truck, and agree the format and cue points with your production team before show day.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
