Boulder, CO Drone Videographer and Operator

Folsom Field and events

Folsom Field is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We fly live drone feeds to the Davis Wade Stadium video boards for Mississippi State football; read the video board case study. For concerts, festivals and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

Open space and the Flatirons

The City of Boulder does not allow drones to launch, land or operate on its Open Space and Mountain Parks land, which includes the Flatirons, apart from approved research, rescue and public safety uses. Boulder County open space has its own rules. We film the foothills from private land with the owner's approval.

Rocky Mountain National Park and Colorado law

Rocky Mountain National Park is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval. Indian Peaks Wilderness is designated wilderness, where the Forest Service does not allow drones to take off or land. Colorado has no statewide drone preemption law, so cities, counties, open space agencies and ski resorts set their own rules, and state law makes using a drone to obstruct police, firefighters or other first responders a crime. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Airspace

Boulder Municipal Airport has no control tower, and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan, about 10 miles southeast, is towered, so some addresses need LAANC. Wildfire and other hazard TFRs close the airspace to drones with little notice, so we check NOTAMs again on the day of every flight. We check every Boulder location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near Folsom Field on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you fly over the Flatirons?

Not from city open space. Boulder does not allow drones to launch, land or operate on Open Space and Mountain Parks land, so we film from private land with the owner's approval.

Can you fly in Rocky Mountain National Park?

Not from National Park Service land without the superintendent's written approval. We film from legal sites outside the park.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Boulder?

It depends on the address. Boulder Municipal has no tower, and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan is towered. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
