Airports and federal sites

Portland International sits under Class C airspace northeast of downtown, and Hillsboro and Troutdale have their own control towers. Portland ANGB at the airport, the Coast Guard's Portland marine safety unit and Camp Withycombe in Clackamas County are federal no-drone areas, closed from the ground to 400 feet around the clock. Portland International Raceway is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We check every Portland location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

Oregon drone law and parks

Oregon treats flying below 400 feet over critical infrastructure as a violation unless the operator is FAA-authorized or has the owner's consent, and property owners can sue over repeated low flights after notice. Oregon State Parks and the ocean shore are closed to drones except at designated drone operation sites or with a special use permit.

The Columbia River Gorge

The Gorge is a national scenic area with mixed federal, state and private land. The Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness is designated wilderness, where the Forest Service does not allow drones to take off or land. Wildfire temporary flight restrictions can close large areas in summer and fall, and flying into one is illegal.

FAQs

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Portland?

It depends on the address. Downtown is a few miles from Class C airspace for Portland International, and the Air National Guard base at the airport is closed to drones. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

Can you fly in Oregon state parks or on the beach?

Only at designated drone sites or with a special use permit. Oregon State Parks and the ocean shore are otherwise closed to drones.

Can you film the Columbia River Gorge?

From approved launch points, yes. Wilderness areas in the Gorge are closed to drone takeoffs and landings, and we confirm the land manager for each site.

Can you fly near Portland International Raceway?

Not inside the FAA flight restriction during covered events at the track. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
