Baltimore

Stadiums and events

M&T Bank Stadium and Oriole Park at Camden Yards are on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. Our crew flew live drone feeds for TV and the video board for the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, and five days of live coverage, live to FOX, at the FIFA Fan Festival Atlanta. For concerts, festivals and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

The DC Special Flight Rules Area

The Washington, DC Special Flight Rules Area reaches 30 nautical miles from Reagan National. Downtown and the Inner Harbor sit just outside it by our measurement, but the southwest edge of the city, BWI and much of Anne Arundel County are inside it. Between 15 and 30 nautical miles from Reagan National, Part 107 flights are allowed under FAA rules, with airspace authorization where the airspace requires it, but the whole area is national defense airspace and violations can bring fines and criminal penalties. We check each address against the FAA map.

Federal sites and Maryland law

Fort McHenry is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval. Fort George G. Meade, the Coast Guard Yard at Curtis Bay and the Warfield Air National Guard Base at Martin State Airport are federal no-drone areas around the clock, and Aberdeen Proving Ground to the northeast has restricted airspace from the surface. Maryland law gives the state alone the power to regulate drone operation, overriding county and city drone rules, and makes it a crime to fly over a correctional facility to photograph it without authorization. Maryland state parks ask drone pilots to contact the park manager before flying, and managers can limit or deny flights; Sandy Point State Park, for example, allows drones only before Memorial Day and after Labor Day.

Airspace

BWI Marshall, about 9 miles south of downtown, has Class B airspace, and Martin State Airport, about 9 miles east, has its own control tower, so many Baltimore addresses need LAANC. We check every Baltimore location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near M and T Bank Stadium on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Is Baltimore inside the DC Special Flight Rules Area?

Partly. The area reaches 30 nautical miles from Reagan National, which takes in the southwest edge of the city and BWI, while downtown sits just outside. We check each address against the FAA map.

Can you fly near Fort Meade or Aberdeen?

No. Fort Meade is a federal no-drone area, and Aberdeen Proving Ground has restricted airspace from the surface, so we plan shoots well outside both.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Baltimore?

It depends on the address. BWI Marshall has Class B airspace, and Martin State Airport has a control tower. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
