FPV drone pilot in Detroit

We fly FPV and small cinewhoop drones in Detroit for arena and stadium events, festivals, venue fly-throughs and brand and car launches. FPV adds close, fast, continuous moves that a standard camera drone cannot get, flown by pilots who rehearse each line first. For general aerials, homes and events see our Detroit, MI drone videographer page.

Little Caesars Arena, Ford Field and Comerica Park

Little Caesars Arena, home of the Red Wings and Pistons, and the Fox Theatre suit indoor FPV with the venue's approval. Indoor flights at an arena need the venue's approval and a flight plan agreed with production, security and the lighting crew, and we fly small, lightweight drones close to the action. Ford Field and Comerica Park are on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. See FPV drones for live broadcast, Indoor arena FPV drones and Concert and festival FPV drones across the US.

Movement at Hart Plaza

Movement, the electronic music festival held at Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, lists drones and any other remote flying device among items fans may not bring. Any drone work there happens only inside the festival's own production plan, from agreed launch spots and clear of open crowds. Flying directly over an open crowd is only allowed when the drone and the operation meet FAA rules for flying over people, so otherwise we keep flight paths over the stage, closed areas and open lanes.

City film permits and airspace

The Detroit film office issues a no-fee general film permit, asks for a location use form about a month before filming plus proof of insurance, and says some projects need more city permits. Detroit Metro's Class B airspace and the Class D around Coleman A. Young International Airport cover parts of the city. We check every Detroit location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

Michigan drone rules

Michigan's Unmanned Aircraft System Act generally prevents cities and counties from passing their own drone ordinances, and state law makes it a felony to knowingly use a drone to interfere with a prison or other key facility. Michigan DNR rules allow drones in state parks and recreation areas, but not over campgrounds, occupied beaches or equestrian facilities, or within 100 yards of historic sites, and commercial flights need the department's written permission first. Belle Isle is a state park, so those rules apply there.

FAQs

Can you fly a drone at Movement in Hart Plaza?

Only inside the festival's production plan. Movement bars fans from bringing drones, so any drone work is planned with the organizer.

Do you need a city permit to film in Detroit?

Usually, yes. The Detroit film office issues a no-fee film permit and asks for a location use form and proof of insurance before filming.

Can Detroit pass its own drone rules?

Mostly no. Michigan law generally prevents cities from passing their own drone ordinances, but film permits, park rules and venues still decide launch spots.

Can FPV footage go live to a stream or screens?

Yes. We send live FPV video to the stream, LED screens or a broadcast truck, and agree the format with your production team before the event.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
