Milwaukee, WI Drone Videographer and Operator

Festivals and game days

Our crew flew drone coverage at Austin City Limits in Zilker Park for the festival's Hulu live broadcast, and the same setup suits Milwaukee lakefront festivals with the organizer's approval. American Family Field and the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis are on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. For festivals, concerts and games we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

Federal sites

The 128th Air Refueling Wing's base at Milwaukee Mitchell International and Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan on the lakefront are federal no-drone areas around the clock. Fort McCoy in western Wisconsin is one too, with restricted airspace from the surface, so statewide shoots get the same check.

Wisconsin law and parks

Wisconsin law bars cities, villages, towns and counties from regulating drone operation, apart from their own drone use, and flying over a correctional institution without authorization can bring a forfeiture of up to $5,000. Milwaukee County Parks still requires written permission from the parks director for aircraft takeoffs and landings, and prior approval for drone filming, so we get it before flying from county park land. Wisconsin DNR prohibits drones in state parks, recreation areas, state natural areas and the Kettle Moraine and Point Beach state forests unless an area is posted for it. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

Airspace

Milwaukee Mitchell International, about 5 miles south of downtown, has Class C airspace, and Lawrence J. Timmerman Airport on the northwest side has its own control tower, so many Milwaukee addresses need LAANC. We check every Milwaukee location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Can you fly near American Family Field on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you fly in Milwaukee County parks?

Only with permission. County rules require written permission from the parks director for aircraft takeoffs and landings, and drone filming needs prior approval.

Can you fly in Wisconsin state parks?

Generally no. Wisconsin DNR prohibits drones in state parks, recreation areas and state natural areas unless an area is posted for it.

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Milwaukee?

It depends on the address. Milwaukee Mitchell International has Class C airspace, and Timmerman Airport has a control tower. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
