Honolulu

Honolulu drone videography

We fly resort and hotel projects, concerts and festivals, brand and tourism content, construction progress and real estate across Honolulu and Oahu. For hotels we also fly one-take interior tours; see indoor fly-through tours. For concerts and festivals we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens; see live broadcast drones and concert and festival drones.

Class B airspace and military bases

Daniel K. Inouye International sits under Class B airspace, and Waikiki is inside it, so most Honolulu flights need FAA authorization through LAANC. Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is a no-drone zone, and the military treats Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay and other Oahu installations the same way. Pearl Harbor National Memorial is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval. We check every Honolulu location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

Diamond Head and state parks

Hawaii state park rules from the Department of Land and Natural Resources prohibit the use, launching or landing of drones, and commercial filming needs a written permit. That covers Diamond Head State Monument and the other state parks on Oahu. The Hawaii Film Office reviews drone requests case by case with at least 14 business days of lead time, and asks for a flight plan map, pilot credentials and insurance of at least $2M per occurrence naming the State of Hawaii.

Beaches and city parks

City and County of Honolulu parks and beach parks have their own permit rules for filming, so we confirm city approval before any beach park shoot. We keep neighbors and people on private property out of frame unless they agree to be filmed.

FAQs

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Honolulu?

It depends on the address. Waikiki and most of the city sit inside Class B airspace for Honolulu's main airport. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

Can you film Diamond Head with a drone?

Not from the state monument. Hawaii state park rules prohibit launching or landing drones, so we plan any approved aerials from outside the park.

Can you fly near Pearl Harbor?

No. Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is a no-drone zone, and the national memorial is National Park Service land.

How long do Hawaii film permits take?

The Hawaii Film Office reviews drone requests case by case and asks for at least 14 business days, plus insurance naming the State.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
