Live event drones in Detroit

This page is for event producers, promoters and venues planning a live event in Detroit. We fly concerts, festivals, parades, arena shows, races and brand activations, with drone feeds sent live to screens, the stream or a broadcast truck, plus fast edits for social. For homes, tourism and general aerials see our Detroit, MI drone videographer page, and for one-take fly-throughs see our Detroit, MI FPV drone pilot page.

Ford Field and Comerica Park

Our crew flew live drone feeds for TV and the video board for the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, and runs stadium feeds the same way. Ford Field and Comerica Park are on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We fly stadium shows only inside an approved production. See Live drone feeds for video boards and Concert and festival FPV drones across the US.

Little Caesars Arena and the Fox Theatre

Little Caesars Arena, home of the Red Wings and Pistons, and the Fox Theatre host concerts and launches where we fly with the venue's approval. Indoor flights at an arena need the venue's approval and a flight plan agreed with production, security and the lighting crew, and we fly small, lightweight drones close to the action.

Movement at Hart Plaza

Movement, the electronic music festival held at Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, lists drones and any other remote flying device among items fans may not bring. Any drone work there happens only inside the festival's own production plan, from agreed launch spots and clear of open crowds. The Detroit film office issues a no-fee general film permit and asks for a location use form about a month before filming plus proof of insurance. Detroit Metro's Class B airspace and the Class D around Coleman A. Young International Airport cover parts of the city. We check every Detroit location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

Michigan drone rules

Michigan's Unmanned Aircraft System Act generally prevents cities and counties from passing their own drone ordinances. Michigan DNR rules allow drones in state parks and recreation areas, but not over campgrounds, occupied beaches or equestrian facilities, or within 100 yards of historic sites, and commercial flights need the department's written permission first. Belle Isle is a state park, so those rules apply there.

FAQs

Can you fly a drone at Movement in Hart Plaza?

Only inside the festival's production plan. Movement bars fans from bringing drones, so any drone work is planned with the organizer.

Do you need a city permit to film a Detroit event?

Usually, yes. The Detroit film office issues a no-fee film permit and asks for a location use form and proof of insurance before filming.

Can you fly at an event on Belle Isle?

Only with Michigan DNR written permission for commercial flights, and never over campgrounds, occupied beaches or near historic sites.

Can you send a live drone feed to screens or a stream?

Yes. We send live drone video to LED screens, the livestream or a broadcast truck, and agree the format and cue points with your production team before show day.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
