Riverfront concerts and festivals

Our crew flies EDC Las Vegas as a three-pilot drone team, with over-the-crowd drones fed into the Hulu live stream. We fly riverfront concerts and festivals, ballpark and coliseum events, campuses, construction progress and real estate across Charleston and the Kanawha Valley. For concerts and festivals we film recaps, and for larger shows we send live drone feeds to the stream or screens. See Live drone feeds for video boards and Concert and festival FPV drones across the US.

State law and parks

West Virginia law makes it a crime to use a drone to invade someone's privacy, harass people or interfere with police and medics, and it allows FAA-authorized commercial flights and film production with the property owner's approval. West Virginia state parks, forests and rail trails allow drones, but pilots must register at the superintendent's office before flying, and the superintendent provides a map of any closed areas. New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is National Park Service land, where launching or landing a drone is prohibited without the superintendent's written approval. Flying directly over an open crowd is only allowed when the drone and the operation meet FAA rules for flying over people, so otherwise we keep flight paths over the stage, closed areas and open lanes. Fully enclosed indoor flights are generally outside FAA airspace rules, so we fly one-take fly-throughs with the owner's approval; see indoor fly-through tours.

Yeager Airport and stadiums

Charleston's Yeager Airport sits under Class C airspace, and downtown is inside its surface area. McLaughlin Air National Guard Base at the airport is a federal no-drone area, closed from the ground to 400 feet around the clock. Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington is on the FAA stadium list, so the 3 nautical mile flight restriction applies from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We check every Charleston location on the FAA sectional, B4UFLY and NOTAMs before quoting, and file LAANC or FAA authorization for any address that needs it.

FAQs

Do you need FAA approval to fly in Charleston?

It depends on the address. Downtown is inside the Class C surface area for Yeager Airport, and the Air National Guard base there is closed to drones. We check every location on the FAA sectional and B4UFLY before quoting and file LAANC where it is needed.

Can you fly in West Virginia state parks?

Yes, after registering at the superintendent's office, who provides a map of any closed areas. We register before every park shoot.

Can you fly near Joan C. Edwards Stadium on game days?

Not inside the FAA stadium flight restriction, which covers 3 nautical miles from an hour before to an hour after covered events. We schedule nearby shoots outside that window.

Can you send a live drone feed to screens or a stream?

Yes. We send live drone video to LED screens, the livestream or a broadcast truck, and agree the format and cue points with your production team before show day.

What insurance do you carry?

Our standard policy is $10M liability, with optional coverage up to $25M when a venue, league or network requires it. Certificates naming your venue or production are issued before the shoot.
